It's been five years since I called Nico Holthaus to ask if he'd direct the movie version of Stuck Outside of Phoenix.
 
I'm proud to say that movie is now available everywhere fine movies are sold. Here's a run-down of places where you can find it this holiday season--or any season:

What I'm Up To: Part I

As we patiently wait for Netflix and Satan (Amazon) to add Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie, I thought I'd string together a blog or three about what I'm writing these days.

First, I'm very close to finishing the screenplay version of Ghost Notes, which is now called Flake. I've been working on this off and on for years, and I finally feel like it's ready. I'll be putting the finishing touches on it in the next week, and sending it out to the folks who might be able to do something with it. If you're curious, the way forward is to read Ghost Notes, my second novel in the great chain of novels that will become ten.

Also, I'm taking a chapter a week of my novel-in-progress One Star into my writers' group The Whom. (We changed our name to The Whom on a whim, and no one bothered to protest. Incidentally, The Whom members Rebecca Kelley and Heather Arndt-Anderson both have had books come out in the last few weeks. This group gets it done, and it's all good.) One Star brings back Hote from Stuck Outside of Phoenix as he navigates the world of tribute bands in 2005. Don't expect this anytime soon, but know it's coming.

I have a five-book omnibus review on 2014 rock novels coming out soon at The Rumpus, and I also wrote a 6,000 word essay on my youth and R.E.M. that has got to find a home somewhere. I'll keep you posted.

Finally, I haven't mentioned my memoir Nineteen Ways to Destroy Your Rock Band: My Life in the Refreshments. Its plight is a bit of a longer story, so I'm going to write up that blog next week for you.

Okay, so.

Right now, it's available only on at Vimeo. I've bought and watched it there, and it works fabulously on my 2009 Mac. So, don't be afraid.

As I watched it, the one word that kept coming to my mind was...

Shocked.

I'm shocked it got done.

I'm shocked how much I like it.

I'm shocked how cool the music sounds.

I'm shocked this many people came together to create something this great.

I mean, they were characters.

In my head.

And now they walk and talk in front of me.

Imagine that for a second.

So, there's nothing to do but be thankful.

When everything is wrong.

And everyone's to blame.

And everything's the same.

You know, you never can tell.

Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie Gets Distro!!!

I just heard from Producer Nico that the movie version of my first novel Stuck Outside of Phoenix has been picked up for distribution. This is fantastic news because it means you all will be able to see the movie soon. I don't have the full scoop yet, but here's what I know.

1) It's a done deal.

2) It will be available through online portals like Amazon and Vimeo.

More details to come soon.

I hear Facebook mutterings that Nico Holthaus has "just signed a deal in LA" for Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie. I hope this means we're on the path to all of you getting to see it very soon.

Badge off to the Printer, plus Stuck the Movie Halloween Showing Info

First, my third novel Badge is finished, proofread, formatted, designed and off to the printer. I should see a proof of the book next week. Then I'll read it again very carefully, probably submitting corrections and generally being anal about everything. I should have a final-final copy in my hands by early/mid-November, when I'll start taunting you with it via the Internet. Those who contributed to my Kickstarter campaign at $25 or more will receive their copy in January 2014, and the book will be available to everyone in February. February is looking like a big month for Badge events too. Stay tuned.

And last but not least, the Tempe Halloween (Saturday, Oct. 26th) showing of Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie is firm! The theater is Pollack Tempe Cinemas, and showtime is 9:30 PM. Your Stuck ticket will also be good for entrance into Sail Inn later that night, which will feature local music and a distinctly haunted vibe. So, go dig you some Stuck this weekend, and get the pants scared off of you to boot!

A New Screening of Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie in Tempe for Halloween!!!

Yes, Phoenicians, Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie is again coming to a theater near you, and for All Hollow's Eve no less.

Producer Nico is a big time Halloween freak, and he's concocted a night of Rock and Scare Mayhem for Saturday, Oct. 26th. Details aren't 1000% firm but here's what we know for sure: The movie will show at a Tempe theater starting at 9:30 PM on Saturday. Your Stuck ticket will be good for both the movie and entrance into Sail Inn later that night, which will feature local music and a distinctly haunted vibe. Sounds like a ghoulishly good time? You better believe it.

So go see Stuck, and get the pants scared off of you!

Quicky Stuck the Movie Update

If I get one question from folks out here in the real world, it's "When's the movie coming out?"

I'm glad to say there's been some good news in that direction. Right now, Nico has one offer for distribution, with what sounds like a couple of other distributors very interested.

We all know nothing is done until it's done, but this is promising. Here's the Facebook announcement.

New Stuck the Movie Review/New Piece

"So, What Did You Think?"

As you might imagine, last Saturday was overwhelming in the best way. What a surprise to find Trouble himself Brian Blush sitting right behind me in the theater. General mayhem ensued. Good to see my old roomy and cohort again.

So, the movie. 

There was so much to like, it's hard to know where to start. The biggest surprise was that each principle actor nailed his moment or two to say what his character believes in. I'm thinking of Lola's dialog about Paris, Gad's "musical epiphany," Lance's "drums and basketball," and Hote's "what makes a good band good" moments. Hote's really a blank slate (or map, tehee) at the beginning of the movie, despite his chest thumping. He's looking for the way forward in his life, and all these characters help him figure it out. Funny, but it's baby Franco who teaches him the most. Way to escape the crib, Hote! 

And how about that baby, eh? What a little charmer! A natural actor if I've ever seen one. I chuckled every time he popped up.

Funny was not in short supply. Four of my favorite moments, two scripted, two not:

1) Digs Ven, when Hote buys him a beer: "You're not gay, are you?"

2) The four-way stop scene when Hote is walking from Lola's to Lance's place to get his car;

3) Hote whispering in Gad's ear while Gad meditates: "You're fuckin weird." (Maybe my favorite moment.)

4) Hote, when Lance offers up one too many "Santanic"s: "You seriously need to stop that." 

And there were some beautiful shots too. I'm partial to that one of Hote squatting in front of Papago Park, but there were others, including the closing shot. Tres beau!

Some of the flaws of the film are obvious, and from what I gather, easily fixable. Here are the ones I haven't heard mentioned:

1) I felt like the "Two Weeks Earlier" backstory dragged and could be pared down considerably. These scenes went down late in the writing phase, and over-explained just about everything. I blame the writer.

2) The scenes overall felt long. I found myself squeezing my armrest when scenes kept going. Every stroll from car to house/apt. door, for example, could be pared down. The 5/2 version is 100 minutes, but this thing could rip your head off at 80-90.  

These are small. The last thing Nico and Co. need right now are 300 voices telling them what to do. Still, those are my two pesos.

There's been some confusion about how soon you can buy tickets, so I'll tell you what I know.

You can buy tickets the day of the show. How soon? Can you run to the theater and buy them that afternoon to make sure you get tickets? Can you buy them, like, now? I'm trying to get answers to those questions. Pollack has one of those weird circular messages that won't allow me to talk to anyone. Would anyone like to go to Pollack and try to buy some tix before Thursday and report back? I'll post your findings here, and on Facebook.

Ten Days to Go

I can't believe we're a mere ten days from the premiere of Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie. It seems like just yesterday I watched Mill Ave. Inc. and called Nico, asking him if he'd be interested in doing the movie version of my first novel. That was almost three years ago.

It's very surreal to have so many people coming up to me and saying, "So, what's up with the movie?" I've been publishing my work for a decade now, starting with Stuck Outside of Phoenix in 2003, and nothing has generated this kind of interest. It makes me want to do another one. It's all story in the end, right?

So, if you're going to be in Tempe on May 2nd and you're coming to the premiere, don't hesitate to say hello. I'll be a very happy man.

Bought a Suit Coat for the Stuck the Movie Premiere

My first suit coat in a decade or so. The last one was I wore to apply for jobs in San Francisco in 2000.

This new one looks like one of Pete Campbell's from Mad Men. I love his suit coats.

Stuck the Movie Premiere Location and Time, Plus New Essay

Two things:

First, the premiere time and location of Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie has been announced. It is Thursday, May 2nd, at The Valley Art Theater on Mill Avenue in Tempe at 6 PM. There's a possiblility, no doubt tied to ticket sales, that there will be another showing later that same night. You know I'll keep you posted.

Second, my first piece ever at The Weeklings has me attacking--of all things--John Lennon's songwriting. Hey, go big or go home, I always say.

Mexico in June

I know a lot of people want details about why I'm not going to be in Mexico in June. Suffice it to say my focus is elsewhere these days, with my many projects and my life in Portland. Mostly, I don't want it to take away from the May 2nd premiere of Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie. I won't have anything else to say about it other than I hope everyone has a good time.

Stuck the Movie Premiere Date!!!

First of all, I won't be in Mexico in June. More on the whys and wherefores later, but know that I'm happy for the Blushian, and the fans, and I hope everyone has a good time.

On a completely different topic, I have an announcement.

Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie has a premiere date, and that date is Thursday May 2nd in Tempe.

Which theater is still up for grabs, but I've been given the green light to let you know the date. I've also been told the theater will be firm soon.

So, if you're traveling to Tempe for this event, I'd book my hotel and hold off on the flight until the theater is firm, which shouldn't be long. That's what I'm doing anyway.
