Like Coachella, but Pleasant

Do you want to have fun this Tuesday night in Portland?

Then come to The Whom's reading at The Corner Bar at 7:30 PM on 7/28.

The Whom features some of the most entertaining and well-published writers in town, and it seems like every one of them has a new offering out right now. Rebecca Kelley's debut novel Broken Homes and Gardens just came out in May, and Heather Arndt Anderson's second foodie offering, Portland: A Food Biography, was released to accolades earlier this year. Finally, writer/humorist/all-around PDX baller Mark Russell saw his first of a series of DC-released comics come out last month. Pretty ridiculous, yo.

The readings themselves will be short, engaging, and the perfect accompaniment to your $2 BEER!

In fact, should you come, you will be the first audience in the History of Man to hear the prologue for my Novel IV, which is called 19 Ways to Destroy Your Rock Band: My Life in the Convincing Fakes.

Think I'm kiddin'?

I assure you I am not.

Come! Bring a friend!

Two Readings in Three Days!

Yep. That's how good I got it.

First was a whole crew of Curbside Splendor readers at the new Reading Frenzy in Alberta. I came for Brian Costello, whose rock-ish novel Losing in Gainesville I plan to review, but I was blown away by the quality work of all four readers.

Second, I made it to Powell's on a rainy Friday night to hear the inimitable Karen Karbo read from the Hawthorne Books reissue of her 1991 slapstick novel The Diamond Lane. The section Karen read felt like it was written yesterday. Wanna read how funny lit fic is supposed to go? Look no further.

So, I'm set with two new, thick titles just in time for the rain.

Badge SF and LA Events This Week!!!

Badge Tour takes me to two California events this week!

My Los Angeles shindig will go down and Stories in Echo Park on Wednesday and will include a brief reading from Badge, along with readings by two other rock-tinged novelists Duke Haney and Rob Roberge. If you followed my blogging about rock novels in 2013, you know how fond I am of both these writers.

My San Francisco soiree happens at Alley Cat Books this Thursday and will also include a brief reading from Badge, along with readings by two cool Bay Area writers Meg Pokrass and Grant Faulkner. So pleased to be heading back to my old stomping grounds and reading with these folks.

Free admission, of course. Q & As to follow. These are my only CA appearances in 2014. Come out and see me!

Seattle Reading This Thursday!!!

This Thursday, Five writers and I converge on The Jewelbox Theater in Seattle for what is sure to be a rock lit spectacle like none other. You're not going to want to miss this. Here's the info. This event is brought to you by The Weeklings, hands down the best arts and culture site on the planet.

Speaking of The Weeklings, the folks there were kind enough to publish my rock lit manifesto this past week. Vive le roque!

Finally, Jon Grayson interviewed me on KMOX this past week as well. We talked Badge, rock stars, and a certain AZ band.

See you Thursday!

February 2014 Badge Events - Part I

We're about two and a half months from the release of Badge (2/4/14), and I already have two Badge-related events to tell you about.

The first one is the day after Badge's release on February 5th at Broadway Books in Portland, where I'll be reading with two of my favorite local authors Mark Russell and Monica Drake. Each author's reading will also very probably feature a multimedia element. The event starts at 7 PM.

The second one is in Seattle on February 27th, where I'll be reading at the Jewelbox Theater with a large cast of other great rock-tinged writers including Sean Beaudoin, Zoe Zolbrod, Rob Roberge, Jodi Angel and Joshua Mohr. The readings will be followed by Seattle musical duo the Drop Shadows, and it will all start at 9:30 PM.

Those two are firm, and there are plenty more to come. Stay tuned.

Come to our Reading Next Week!!!

For the first time in two and seven-twelveths years, I will be participating in a reading.

Yep. It's at Taborspace in SE Portland, and I'll be reading with other members of my writing group Writers Anonymous. The Co-Guests of Honor are Mark Russell, whose God is Disappointed in You will have just come out on Top Shelf; and Heather Arndt Anderson, whose Breakfast: A History just came out on Altamira Press. (Heather promises to make pancakes while reading.)

Other readers will include me, Sarah Gilbert and Rebecca Kelley, and the night will also feature live music by Dave Lindenbaum. (Other WA members may sign on too.) I'll be reading a short piece you've never heard before and manning the book table with Kel. Here's the skinny:

What: Out in Public: Readings from the Writers Anonymous Writing Group
Where: TaborSpace 5441 SE Belmont St  Portland, OR 97215 (503) 238-3904
When: Thursday, August 8th, 7-9 PM

Come help us celebrate two books being released by our group members within a month of each other, which is frickin' ridiculous.

Stuck the Movie Tidbits

A few Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie tidbits from Nico's and my conversation yesterday:

-The first "table read," which is where all the actors sit at a table and read the script in its entirety, is a week from this Tuesday. Oh, to be a fly on the wall for that one.

-In an effort to watch our budget, catering for cast and crew is going to be donated by many Phoenix area restaurants. Bless you, Phoenix area restaurants.

-Nico meets this week with City of Tempe folks about things like grants, permits and other exciting stuff.

Finally, Bill Pasdeaux (a.k.a. David Albert) is doing a weekly online reading from Stuck Outside of Phoenix, leading up to the shooting of Stuck Outside of Phoenix the Movie. This week's reading is of one of my favorite passages, where Hote is battling being no kinda dancer and Lola is trying to pull him down to the dance floor. Take a gander.
